I need some history help if possible :) 1. Why was New England for the factory system? What resources were in New England? 2. Who were Eli Whitney, Francis Cabot Lowell, and Samuel Slater? 3. What was the cotton gin? How did it have a negative impact rather than positive? 4. Define interchangeable parts and an assembly line. What were the purposes of these new innovations?
Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin to make it easier and less time consuming to clean cotton. Plantation owners needed fewer slaves to clean cotton. Fewer slaves sounds good. But, since cleaning it was easier, they wanted to plant more of it. So the demand for slaves increased and the work slaves were forced to do got much harder. If you build a gun by hand. You make the trigger to fit the rest of the gun you made. If that trigger gets broken some time, somebody will have to make a trigger that will fit that gun. You can't just take one off another gun a have it work. Interchangeable parts are exactly the same. So every barrell, and every trigger and every flash pan or a certain model gun, fits every other gun of that model. Quicker to build and easier to repair.
