Some of the typical things to check are not allowing division by zero and not allowing square roots of negative numbers. If you have an equation with variables in the denominator, set the denominator equal to zero and solve. That will give you the values of the variable that will cause a zero denominator, and those values of the variable will have to be excluded from the domain. If there is a variable in a square root, set the radicand less than zero and solve. The solution of the inequality is the values you need to exclude from the domain because they will cause a square root of a negative number.
