What is the value of the expression?

-8(3) 3 is the exponent.

I did 8 x 8 x 8 and got 512.
But is the answer supposed to be negative or positive?

That depends usually if there if the negative is inside a parenthesis or not, though admittedly not for odd powers.

In this case either - (8x8x8) or -8x-8x-8 both cases will give -512
