Tangential component

I have tangent vector, \[T= (-\sin t \cos t, \cos ^{2} t, \sin t)\] and speed, \[\sigma = \sec t\] how do i find the tangential component from that? Am I supposed to take the differential of the speed and then multiply it with T?
