help!

OpenStudy (pflori1234_pop):

\[-7x^2y^2 (8x^2y -5xy +11xy^2 -31)\]

OpenStudy (pflori1234_pop):

@TheSmartOne

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

You'll need to distribute a(b - c) = ab - ac You'll apply the distributive property to your question. It would be something like this: a(b - c + d - f) = ab - ac + ad - af

OpenStudy (pflori1234_pop):

can u explain it to me in numbers... thats really confusing for me

OpenStudy (pflori1234_pop):

@sleepyjess @imqwerty

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

I did it with variables, mhmm 5(1 - 5 + 3 + 6) we can simplify the parenthesis, but in your question we can't since they aren't like terms, so let's not simplify the parenthesis 5(1) - 5(5) + 5(5) + 5(6) = 5 - 25 + 25 + 30 = 5 + 30 = 35

OpenStudy (pflori1234_pop):

i dont understand with the random numbers sorry... I know I have to distribute the \[-7x^2y^2\] to all the numbers in the parentheses.. for the first one i got

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

yes, you multiply it with each term in the parenthesis

OpenStudy (pflori1234_pop):

\[-42x^4y^2\]

OpenStudy (pflori1234_pop):

I'm having trouble with the next one

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

what is -7 * 8 = ? and y^2 * y = ? you got x^4 correctly :) then we'll move to the next part :)

OpenStudy (pflori1234_pop):

oh I'm meant 56

OpenStudy (pflori1234_pop):

idk what y^2 * y = ? would be

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

use the property: \(\Large a^b \times a^c = a^{b+c}\)

OpenStudy (pflori1234_pop):

y^3

OpenStudy (pflori1234_pop):

i need help with the next part

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

\(-7x^2y^2 (8x^2y -5xy +11xy^2 -31)\) Now we need to do -7x^2y^2 * -5xy what do you get? :)

OpenStudy (pflori1234_pop):

i dont know.. i need help...i think maybe -35x^3y^3

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

mhmm, not quite what is -7 * -5 = ? negative times negative equals positive :P

OpenStudy (pflori1234_pop):

35x^3y^3

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

so far we have \(-56x^4y^3 + 35x^3y^3\) we still need to find -7x^2y^2 * 11xy^2 and -7x^2y^2 * -31

OpenStudy (pflori1234_pop):

-77x^3y^4

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

yes, and -7x^2y^2 * -31 = ?

OpenStudy (pflori1234_pop):

217x^2y^2

TheSmartOne (thesmartone):

so our final answer is \(-56x^4y^3 + 35x^3y^3 -77x^3y^4+ 217x^2y^2\)
