OpenStudy (tiniloisx):

Hello! I am writing a story and could use some help/opinions from other writers. Maybe you guys might have encountered a similar issue. Since King Arthur is a legend/myth and there are tons of books, movies, and tv shows *cough* Merlin *cough* lol anyway, can I write a book with my own twist of the legend or do you have to get permission? I know that with greek and roman mythology you can do whatever you want if I am not mistaken. Plus any writing tips would be great, love learning new things. :]

OpenStudy (ladycielphantomhive):

I believe you can use it, as long as it isn't a direct copy and you've twisted it somehow. I've seen Alice in Wonderland twisted stories professionally published. Maybe the publishing company takes care of any copyright issues. No idea.

OpenStudy (tiniloisx):

@ladycielphantomhive Yup! I plan to twist the myth completely and just make it my own since the legends/myths I have read are soooooo weird I wanna make it family friendly xD anyway thank you! :]

umerlodhi (umerlodhi):

ok

OpenStudy (sophiab):

Maybe just try giving permission at the start

OpenStudy (tiniloisx):

Since its a legend/myth I have no idea who to give permission to, kind of like the greek gods? No clue who came up with them lol, they just have always been there from some point where some person just thought to write the legends. @sophiab But, you just give me an idea, I could write "Based on the Legends of King Arthur" in the beginning?

OpenStudy (beckysparklesalot):

Is pretty sure that the King Arthur legend is in the Public Domain. I might be wrong so you should check for yourself. If it's copyrighted and therefore not in the public domain then you need permission. But stuff in the Public Domain which I believe the King Arthur legend is in is fair game.
