Two planes left the airport at noon. One flew east and the other flew west at twice the speed. After three hours the planes were 2,700 miles apart. How fast was each plane flying?

OpenStudy (rissa):

If both planes leave at noon than that mean we can give each plan a variable. One plane is going 2x the other plan. One plane is x and the other is 2x. Therefore, it would be \[2x+x=2700\]

OpenStudy (rissa):

than solve which is x=900m

OpenStudy (rissa):

than since it is 3hours you take 900miles/3hours = 300milesperhour

OpenStudy (rissa):

than plug in for each plan. Plan one is 300m/h and plan two is 2(300m/h)= 600m/h

OpenStudy (rissa):

that is how fast each plan went.

OpenStudy (braydonlevi99):

Okay, thank you. :D
