AVIATION:2 planes left an airport at noon.one flew east one flew west at twice the speed.After 3 hours the planes were 2700 mi apart. how fast was each plane flying

OpenStudy (allen27):

@CandyCove

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

x = speed of slower plane flying east y = speed of faster plane flying west the faster plane few twice as fast, so y = 2*x

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

use the formula distance = rate*time "rate" is another word for "speed"

OpenStudy (allen27):

idk how to do it

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

plane flying east distance = rate*time d = x*3 d = 3x --------------------- plane flying west distance = rate*time d = y*3 d = 3*y d = 3*(2x) ... replace y with 2x d = 6x

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the two distances must add to 2700, so 3x+6x = 2700

OpenStudy (allen27):

thx jim

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

no problem
