The Vietnam War Era would also be good. Civil Rights movement, woman's rights movement, and the college kids fighting against the draft.

Civil Rights movement and the American Revolution would both be great topics. If you ant to do something a bit outside of the box but maybe harder to research, maybe try one of a handful of religious conflicts (The Mormon War or the tensions between Protestants and Catholics in early-America and around Civil War time). Or maybe labor camps in the California area during the Great Depression. Those camps were often separated by race and the workers suffered horrible living conditions.
