In the lesson, you learned about a debris convergence zone, or “garbage patch,” that can form in the center of the Pacific Ocean. How is the formation of this patch related to ocean currents? Where else in the world’s oceans are garbage patches likely to form? I don't need an answer.... just help.

A "debris convergence zone" is presumably modern day speak of a "a place where a pile of rubbish - rubbish relative to the non rubbish, that is - piles, or is piled up". I love the wording. Glamorous and warm thought the pacific ocean is, it's the idea of fluid flow and currents which may be more significant. Sometimes, when I'm going to my non glamorous local shop on a particularly windy day here in the UK, I noticed what you COULD call "air whirl pools". They're vortices which seem to form in corners, sneaky things. The point about these vortices, is that any "debris" - leaves, human debris or whatever - seems to get sucked into the vortex, so it sort converges within the zone of the vortex. Hop out for a walk on a windy day, and, looking mostly at the ground, have a squint for a few vortices. As with the moving air/atmosphere, so the glamorous pacific ocean has UNDERCURRENTS. Regrettably, I'm no oceanographer, but, just as there are PREVAILING WINDS in the atmosphere's fluid, I think that there are PREVAILING TIDES in the oceans. At all depths. So, any "debris", whatever oceanic debris is, may pile up in any voritices if they occur regularly, as they might do if prevailing means that it happens often. UK's prevailing weather seems to come from the west and travel to the east. Since west of UK is USA, UK can get a diluted version of what the USA gets very much more strongly. I'm thinking about HURRICANES in USA vs the high winds from them which arrive in UK later. Why ? Possibly because the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, and this hints that the earth is spinning in a direction which tends to make things go West to East. All of the above is a very long winded way of saying that I've got absolutely no idea what I'm talking about, it's guesswork but it might help. I just love the phrasing of the question. Debris convergence zone becomes garbage patch becomes rubbish dump. Nice one. http://perendis.webs.com

Thinking about it, there's a couple of things that might be true. I'm thinking of the Great Barrier reef, is it called, of the coast of Australian. It's a CORAL reef. I think that coral is almost the same thing as CALCIUM. So, it's possible that the reef is a massive pile of calcium. Where's the calcium from ? Possibly the skeletons etc of dead marine life, washed into the reef area by prevailing tides to form the reef. The garbage dump, in other words. And in the reef, marine life living decides to have a look and see what's there. A little bit like poor people in certain countries raid rubbish dumps for the "rubbish" that the better off people have thrown away. Sort of a form of "marine scavenging". The above is purely a guess, based on what I think I know about the barrier reef, coral, and fish. Another example would be something that happened during WORLD WAR 2. Basically, the British decided to plant a fake dead general with the Germans, with documents on him which would totally mislead the German high command. The plan was called OPERATION MINCEMEAT, and a dead body, dressed like a high ranking officer, was dumped in the european mediterranean off the coast of spain, I think it was. The plan was to allow the prevailing currents and tides in the sea in that area to wash the body ashore (flotsam and jetsam, in fact). Once on shore, it would be discovered by the authorities and the documents would do the rest. This outrageous and possibly gruesome plan actually did work, it seems. As a result of it, the Germans completeley altered their plans for defending against an allied attack on the med. The result was that, basically, they were in the wrong places when the attack came, with the saving of thousands of lives. The plan relied on the people having expert knowledge of sea/maritime conditions, currents and the like, so that the body could basically hitch a ride on the various currents and get ashore in Spain.
