VMware is a machine emulator.
One may use it to create a virtual computer, and install an OS on it.

The most common use for it, is for running programs that are for older OS.
e.g. SOTE is for WInodws 95, you have 8.1. So you use VMware to run WIndows 95, and use SOTE.
