Fun fact: They broke ties on Feb. 03 which is my birthday! Anyways, WW1 started in 1914 and went on until 1918. The leader of Germany declared unrestricted submarine warfare and threatened to sink U.S. ships. Woodrow Wilson then decided to break ties and try to avoid conflict between the countries. http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/u-s-breaks-diplomatic-relations-with-germany
