Please help me, I will give you a shiny medal :) The median for the given set of six ordered data values is 26.5 . 7 , 12 , 21, ? , 41, 51 What is the missing value? The missing value is ? (I put 30 but I got it wrong) :(

OpenStudy (lacris):

30 was incorrect, but I dont understand why, I did (21+x)/2 = 26.5 and got x = 30 (which was the missing number value). But it says it's wrong, what equation do I use to solve this?

OpenStudy (helpppp):

Okay, so median is the number in the middle. list out the numbers from 26 to 30... |dw:1473191263536:dw|

OpenStudy (helpppp):

21 to 30*

OpenStudy (lacris):

I was told about the median being like: \[\frac{ n+1 }{ 2 }\]

OpenStudy (helpppp):

So, if that one didn't work, what would be your next guess?

OpenStudy (helpppp):

Okay, lemme see. N representing what?

OpenStudy (lacris):

the number of observations

OpenStudy (helpppp):

Well, I'm not sure how that would work... :/ lemme go check something real quick

OpenStudy (helpppp):

Okay, I see now. I didn't use that when growing up. XD but that is how you woud find what spot the median would be in. You have that already. So you need to find the value of the missing number.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Rules for finding media: Write the data in ascending order. 1. If the number of data points is odd, then the median is the middle data point. 2. If the number of data points is even, then the median is the average of the middle two data points. In this case one of the middle 2 data points is unknown. The median is \[\frac{ 25 + x }{ 2 }=26.5\]

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Now solve this equation for x. Be certain to check your answer.

OpenStudy (helpppp):

Brilliant as always ^

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Glad you think so! Thx and good luck!

OpenStudy (lacris):

sorry, my computer crashed, thank you both for helping me: so I would get this: 7 , 12 , 21, ? , 41, 51 are listed from least to greatest. Therefore \[\frac{ 21+x }{ 2 } = 26.5\] |dw:1473206116004:dw| is this correct?
