I believe the message of the poem is that there are different types of love and that each one can have a different outcome. In this poem I believe the story is that the woman had a poor experience with love from a previous person, while the man would go from one person to the other, (he burns the fishes in the sea) but when he finally meets the woman, he settles down and she basically says that she will love only him if he loves only her.
