OpenStudy (mady143):

If element X has 57 protons, how many electrons does it have?

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Any particular element has a fixed number of protons, for example, hydrogen has 1, Helium has 2, carbon has 6, etc. In order to have neutral charge, the number of electrons of an element in an unionized state always equals the number of protons. This number is called the atomic number.
