She was a young woman who, when she took the throne, was sovereign of Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Bohemia, Transylvania, Mantua, Milan, Lodomeria and Galicia, the Austrian Netherlands and Parma. By marriage, she was Duchess of Lorraine, Grand Duchess of Tuscany and Holy Roman Empress.
She immediately was attacked by former allies sworn to defend her royal claims. She spent her entire reign having to justify to the world that a woman could do the job. Strengthening royal power is the way to keep an empire together. She reigned for 40 years and carried out reforms that helped her people. She did it well and did it while bearing 16 children.
