Why do cities disappear? The possibilities are about the same now as always. If there's no work, people move away. If an earthquake or hurricane wipes out a town, it might not get rebuilt. If everybody gets sick and dies or whatever, people aren't likely to want to go back there. Or maybe the people on the other side of the mountain are better looking, or richer or attacked them to be their slaves. There is always the possibility of aliens landing and taking them away, but I wouldn't put that for an answer.
