The Mujahadeen were the Afghan force that forced out the Soviets. We supported them with arms and cash. When the Soviets were gone. We lost interest and the weapons and such fell to the Taliban.
Al-Qaida started in Saudi Arabia. SA is an ally of sorts and didn't want Al Q to be hanging out where the US might be bombing them. Al-Q is Arab. They found a new home with the Taliban in Afghanistan, where the US wasn't paying attention any more. The Afgan Tallys didn't mind these Arabs because they spent lots of money building bases to train other Arabs. Besides the Al-Q said stuff like death to America and were going to take over the world. Seemed like a win for Talibaners.

So AlQ tries to blow up the Trade Center, blows up American Embassies in Kenya, attacks US navy ships and gets people to riot and attack US forces in Somalia. Pres. Clinton tells them to knock it off and treats them more like criminals than military enemies.
New century, new president. AlQ has guys in the US learning to fly, but not land, airplanes.

AlQ does 9/11 and President Bush & co think maybe we should look at Afghanistan again. Hey AlQ has bases there. We do righteous war and take out the bases, the Taliban govt and the horse they rode in on.
AlQ looks to be hurtin'. Osama Bin Laden plays hide n seek long enough to embarrass Pres Bush.
Maybe AlQ is still around but they sorta morph into what Pres Obama call Al-Qaida JV: ISIS. That's more than you wanted but the answer is C.
