The frontier was closed by 1880. Most people thought Indians would soon die out. They'd be very surprised how well tribes are doing now. Americans generally thought that assimilation was best for the tribes. Lots of schools set up to educate Indian kids, get them speaking English and forbid native tongues. Lots of programs to get them farming and live in proper houses. Enough of that generation got the idea that education could help. Their children became lawyers and activists and such. Figured out how to use the system to fight back.
