This problem may appear clearer if written as shown below: 4d2e - d2e = 4d^2e - 1d^2e or as 4 d^2e -1d^2e ----------- Note that d2 is vague to the point of being unacceptable. I'm assuming that you mean d^2, which reads as "the square of d."
