BODMAS in UK
= PEMDAS in the USA.
OpenStudy (stellabella146):
Parentheses
Exponents: \[x ^{2}\]
Multiply/Divide
Add/Subtract.
Parentheses first then Exponents the Multiply or Divide it depends on which comes first on the left side. Then Add or Subtract same rules with Multi and Divide
OpenStudy (helper2197):
ok i get that but i always get confused and mess up
OpenStudy (helper2197):
-12 ÷ 3 · (-8 + (- 4² )-6) +2
-12 ÷ 3 · (-8 + (- 16 )-6) +2
im stuck after this
OpenStudy (welshfella):
-12 / 3 *(-8 + (-4)^2 - 6) + 2
first do the 'inside' bracket first
= -12 / 3 *(-8 + 16 - 5) + 2
Now the other parentheses
= -12 / 3 *(2) + 2
Now work out 3 * (2) = 6

OpenStudy (welshfella):
= -12/6 = 2
NOw do the division and finally add the 2.
OpenStudy (helper2197):
so the answer is 2
OpenStudy (welshfella):
* -12/6 + 2 I should have written
OpenStudy (welshfella):
No
first do the division -12/ 6
then add the 2
OpenStudy (welshfella):
division is done before add

OpenStudy (helper2197):
so the answers 4
OpenStudy (welshfella):
-12/6 = 2 was a typo
Not 4
-12 /6 is not = 2
OpenStudy (helper2197):
so the answers 2
OpenStudy (welshfella):
a negative divided by a positive gives a negative result.
OpenStudy (helper2197):
so - 2

OpenStudy (welshfella):
-4 is the result of -2 - 2 NOT -2 + 2
OpenStudy (helper2197):
so it a postive
OpenStudy (helper2197):
so 4
OpenStudy (welshfella):
No helper. You really ought to study the arithmetic involving negative numbers.
- 2 + 2 = 0
OpenStudy (helper2197):
oh can you sum it all up for me please
