OpenStudy (warpedkitten):

4-5x = 12 + 3x

OpenStudy (wckeller):

What do you think the answer is?

OpenStudy (warpedkitten):

I did 4 - 5x - 3x = 12 + 3x - 3x 4 - 2x = 12 4 - 4 - 2x = 12 - 4 2x / 2x = 8/2 x = 4

OpenStudy (warpedkitten):

Should it be negative -2x / -2x?

OpenStudy (wckeller):

Okay, lets check that by plugging 4 back into the equation. 4-5(4)=12+3(4) 5*4=20 4-20= -16 -16=13+3(4) 3*4=12 12+13=26 -16=26 So unfortunately, this isnt the right answer.

OpenStudy (wckeller):

Lets try starting over.

OpenStudy (wckeller):

4-5x=12+3x +5x +5x 4=12+5x+3x 4 = 12+8x -12 -12 4-12=8x 4-12= -8 -8=8x ÷8 ÷8 -1=x

OpenStudy (wckeller):

Always try getting X on one side of the equation first

OpenStudy (wckeller):

And put all of the other numbers onto the other side.

OpenStudy (wckeller):

We can check my answer: 4-5(-1)=12+3(-1) 5*-1=-5 4-(-5) is the same thing as 4+5 4+5=9 9=12+3(-1) 3(-1)=-3 12+(-3) is the same thing as 12-3 12-3=9 9=9 So x=-1 is indeed the correct answer.

OpenStudy (warpedkitten):

That makes more sense. Thank you.

OpenStudy (wckeller):

No problem.
