OpenStudy (df001):

What does "Bony prominence/prominent" and "projection" mean in bone markings?

OpenStudy (df001):

I got two definitions which are Tuberosity: Large rounded projection Process: Any bony prominence

OpenStudy (df001):

Does projection and prominence means for parts of bones to stick out? Does projection and prominence mean the same thing?

OpenStudy (mathmate):

Both mean the parts of the bone that sticks out. Bone prominence is a little more specific, see http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/bony+prominence `bony prominence Any point on the body where the bone is immediately below the skin surface, which can be:` `(1) Normal, these being known as bony landmarks; or` `(2) Abnormal, which correspond to reactive outgrowths of bone (exostoses), benign tumours (e.g., osteoma) or malignant tumours (e.g., osteosarcoma).` Projections can include other specific bone features, such as condyle, which is `a smooth rounded projection` (Gray's Anatomy, 30th ed.) If you can get your hands on Gray's Anatomy (try your school library), you will find many other specific features.
