1.03 Module One quiz Algebra II

OpenStudy (will.h):

The answer for the 1st question is: I will analyze the steps of each Martian starting with Splott. The 1st step Splott did is to add 3x to both sides and that step is correct. The 2nd step Splott did is to simplify and that step is also correct. The 3rd step Splott did is to add 4 to both sides and that step is incorrect he/she should have subtracted 4 from both sides. Now the next Martian, Fizzle The 1st step Fizzle did was to subtract 2x from both sides and that step is correct. The 2nd step Fizzle did was to simplify and that step is also correct. The 3rd step Fizzle did was to subtract 14 from both sides and that step is correct. The 4th step Fizzle did was to simplify and that step was correct. The 5th step Fizzle did was to add -5 to both sides and that step is incorrect he/she should have divided -5 on both sides. Conclusion: Both of them solved the equation incorrectly. The right way to solve the equation is as the following. 2x + 4 = -3x + 14 I will subtract 2x from both sides and subtract 14 from both sides. 2x + 4 – 2x = -3x – 2x + 14 4 = -5x + 14 4 – 14 = -5x + 14 – 14 -10 = -5x Now I will divide -5 on both sides -10/-5 = x 2 = x To check if our answer is correct we may plug in 2 instead of x in both sides of the equation and if both sides got the same answer then the x value that we found is correct. 2(2) + 4 = -3(2) + 14 8 = 8 Therefor the answer of x value was correct.
