OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

Rodger Williams was a reform preacher who was exiled from the Puritan colonies of Plymouth and Massachusets. He had heretical ideas about separation of church and state which those colonies could not allow to spread. He founded Rhode Island along with others who tired of Puritan control. The Pequot people were getting tired of all the colonists and a war began: the Pequot War. Willams was good friends with the Narragansett, the people who lived around Williams settlement. He convinced the Narragansett to join with the British colonists against the Pequot. They did and became the most dominant tribe in the area. Later, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Plymouth united against Williams and his Narragansett allies because they didn't like the power they were starting to show. That ended up as King Phillips War. Williams was in in seventies then and died.
