myininaya (myininaya):
Try dividing both sides by 3 to isolate the |2x+5|
myininaya (myininaya):
Also if |u|=a where a is positive
then u=a or u=-a
OpenStudy (gudetamas):
ok so 2x+5 = 4
OpenStudy (ageta):
yes
myininaya (myininaya):
that's one equaiton you will neeed to solve
there is one more equation you need to solve

OpenStudy (ageta):
subtract 5
OpenStudy (ageta):
from both side
OpenStudy (gudetamas):
what equation?
OpenStudy (ageta):
there is another equation you have to solve after you find x
OpenStudy (ageta):
the same equation just plug in the x

OpenStudy (ageta):
for now lets find x first
OpenStudy (gudetamas):
ok so x is -1/2 correct?
OpenStudy (ageta):
yes
OpenStudy (ageta):
now plug in -1/2 to the first equation
myininaya (myininaya):
3|2x+5|=12
divide 3 on both sides
|2x+5|=4
the two equations you need to solve are:
2x+5=4 2x+5=-4

OpenStudy (ageta):
which is 3|2x+5|=12
OpenStudy (ageta):
now plug in -1/2 to x
OpenStudy (ageta):
@gudetamas you there
OpenStudy (gudetamas):
yes
OpenStudy (gudetamas):
ok i worked it out and i got x = 1

OpenStudy (gudetamas):
is that the final answer or do i put down the two answers?
OpenStudy (ageta):
no sorry post it and i will see where you messed up
OpenStudy (gudetamas):
ok so i did 3|2(-1/2)+5| = 12 and then 2(-1/2) is 1 so i wrote 3|-1+5|=12 and then i divided by 3 on both sides and got -1+5=4 and the i subtracted 5 and got -1
myininaya (myininaya):
have you solve the two equations I wrote above @gudetamas ?
OpenStudy (gudetamas):
1) 2x=-1 and 2) 2x +5 = -9

myininaya (myininaya):
where did the -9 come from?
myininaya (myininaya):
the equations I wrote were
"3|2x+5|=12
divide 3 on both sides
|2x+5|=4
the two equations you need to solve are:
2x+5=4 2x+5=-4"
OpenStudy (gudetamas):
-4 - 5
myininaya (myininaya):
the first one you can rewrite as 2x=-1
and the second oen can be rewritten as 2x=-9
myininaya (myininaya):
not 2x+5=-9

OpenStudy (gudetamas):
oh yeah sorry
OpenStudy (gudetamas):
and then i do what?
myininaya (myininaya):
you still need to finish solving 2x=-1 and 2x=-9
I think you solve the first and got x=-1/2
OpenStudy (gudetamas):
yes
OpenStudy (gudetamas):
how would i finish solving

myininaya (myininaya):
are you having trouble solving 2x=-9?
myininaya (myininaya):
to undo multiplication you will need to divide to isolate the variable
OpenStudy (gudetamas):
u divide 2 by -9
myininaya (myininaya):
the other way around
-9 by 2
OpenStudy (gudetamas):
it would be -9/2
