Dole's family were immigrants to the Kingdom of Hawaii in the 1840s. He was born there. 
He went to the United States for college but returned to his family's adopted home of Hawaii.
The American settlers became rich growing sugar in Hawaii. At some point Sanford Dole and others decided Hawaii should become a territory of the US. They illegally removed Queen Liliʻuokalani using US Marines. They had no authority to command the Marines. 
There was a short time when Dole's group pretended to give power back to Liliʻuokalani put Dole acted as president. 
They convinced Congress that Hawaii really wanted to be annexed by the US. Laws were passed to take Hawaii under US control. 
It is a very shameful episode in US History but it got forgotten because we got a naval base in the Pacific, happy sugar millionaires and Hawaiians seem kind of like Indians, so why not?
