Question

Wrote a couple of poems in the car today, too long for the poem thread I think. One's sparked by a statement about passion I heard a few years ago (the statement is in the poem, see if you can guess it!) and the other is on my love-hate relationship with swimming pools (I can't really swim yet, lol).

Passion.
Without it, you’re bored. Listless. Uninterested.
Empty as an Olympic village
When the ceremonies have come and gone.

Passion’s what gives you get-up-and-go
When your body, your mind are telling you, “No,”
Passion’s the red that colours your vision
Before you make that fateful decision
To do what’s right or blend with the crowd
To simply fit in or make someone proud

Proud that they knew you.

Proud that they helped you.
Proud that they fostered and nurtured and kept that flame
Burning inside of you.
That flame that made you important.

That flame that sparked and flared in your heart
That convicted you to contribute your part
That flash of insight, incandescent genius-

What rhymes with genius?

See, passion gives you focus.
That laser-sharp singleness of thought that hardens the details
Paves the way for that hot-chocolate break and the
Right-brained instant of creativity
That hooks them all together.

Passion for education makes you memorize
Corpus callosum, amygdala, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex-
Where’s that one again? (Top right brain.) Oh, yeah.
Even if you despise biology
Cause there’s only so many engineering courses you can take
I mean, write a poem sometime!

Passion, it keeps you writing and writing,
Pages and pages in variable lighting
Start over, write, edit, correct,
Until one morning you finally detect

That it’s finished. It’s done. It’ll never be perfect
But now it’s something your editor can work with
While you move on to the next thing in your heart.

Speaking of your heart, follow it.
Speaking of your part, do it.
Concerning your best, be it.
Concerning the rest, leave it.

Be passionate in everything that you do,
Cause someday they’ll all be looking at you.

Chocolate brown and crystal blue

Pretty colours, me and you

I cannot breathe you in, it’s true

But soon I won’t be scared of you

Cutting water like a shark
From golden dawn to dusky dark
Not frightened now, I’m having fun
For I and water now are one.
