These two terms are used by Protestant Christians to describe the difference in congregations when any new way of thinking enters Christian thinking. Since you didn't give context to the question, I'll answer for the Great Awakening. In the 1720s most New England churches were Congregationalists. The religious fervor of the time was based on Calvinist teachings. The Old Lights were more moderate. The New Lights were evangelical Calvinists.
