Algebra 22 Online
OpenStudy (annasam1813):

I need help evaluating this expression... I don't really understand this type of thing so I would love it if you could help me through the steps. :-) |-4b-8|+|-1-b^2|+2b^3; b=-2

OpenStudy (melissa_something):

Hello :) Fist let's substitute b into the equation and simplify: |8-8| + |-1 -(-2)^2| +2 (-2)^3

OpenStudy (melissa_something):

After you did all the annoying little stuff you should get 0+ |-5| +2(-2)^3

OpenStudy (melissa_something):

The absolute value is the distance between a number and zero. The distance between a number and zero

OpenStudy (melissa_something):

The distance between -5 and 0 is 5. So 0 + 5- 16

OpenStudy (annasam1813):

So then it would be -11?

OpenStudy (melissa_something):

YES!!!!

OpenStudy (melissa_something):

Yayyy :)

OpenStudy (annasam1813):

Oh my goodness XD I get how you got it, thank you so much. :-) <3
