How did the Catholic Church help set up the nations that occupy Europe today? They organized people into groups by tribal loyalty, then appointed bishops to rule them. They funded invasions that allowed some tribes to rise above others and form nations. They selected and trained tribal leaders to be kings of city-states, which later became nations.

The Pope was the spiritual leader of the Church during the Middle Ages. What reason did the Church give for claiming authority over kings? Spiritual needs overshadowed human needs during the Middle Ages. God worked through the Pope to select and anoint kings. The Pope was elected by bishops who lived in the various kingdoms. Popes were more generally more respected by the people than kings.
