Choose a letter (such as x) to represent the unknown. Define the unknown, x. This approach is very common to algebra. How would you represent 23% of x? How would you represent the 1990 population PLUS the increase in the population?
x+.23=321.7 This is all I can come up with
@mathmale
You are adding together 2 different numbers. The first is x (the original, 1990, population). The second is the INCREASE in population between 1990 and 2015. Given "23%" and "x", how would you express the INCREASE in population?
x(2.3)=321.7
@mathmale
Again: You are adding 2 numbers together on the left side of your equation (or should be!). Note: your "x(2.3)=321.7" does not show that you are adding two numbers together on the left side. Therefore, it cannot be correct. The first number represents the initial population of this own, that is, the pop in the year 1990. The second repr. the INCREASE in this population over the period 1990-2015. The percentage increase is 23%. You must take this 23% (or 0.23) and use it in a simple algebraic expression to represent the INCREASE.
Then, add together the original population and the increase in population 1990-2015. Finally, solve your equation for the unknown. Please show your work..
.23x+x=321.7
is that right?
Let the population in 1990 be x people when this is increased by 23% the population becomes 321.7 million 23% as a decimal number = 23/100 = 0.23 so population in 2015 will be x + what?
One of your earlier efforts was "x+.23=321.7". Note that you are adding together two numbers. Yes, finally, you have written the correct equation that includes x, the original population, and 0.23x, the increase in population. Right. Now add together the left side, to get ONE algebraic expression. Then solve your expression for the unknown.
Yes, your .23x+x=321.7 is correct, altho' I'd write it as x+0.23x=321.7.
x+.23=321.7
Why did you go back to your previous version? 0.23 is meaningless here. 0.23 is the coefficient of x as you express the "increase in x."
Original population: x Increase in population: ?? (you had this right before) Total 2015 population = sum of the above
so how do i find the increase in x?
Please go back and review this discussion; I have explained that several times.
261.5454
In words you want 'x plus 0.23 times x = 321.7 ' 0.23 on its own means nothing - its the INCREASE in x - therefore it must be multiplied by x.
I typed the following to you 7 minutes ago: " 0.23x, the increase in population." Please, if you don't understand something like that, don't let it slide; ask clarifying questions. I'd like to see your work, please. x + 0.23x = 321.7 What next? How would you check your answer?
1.23x = 321.7 divide 321.7 by 1.23 =answer. then check work by plugging in 261.50 into x for the original equation. Why exactly do you need to plug in the increase in population?
Your method is fine. You don't have to "plug in the increase in population." Your goal was to find the ORIGINAL population, represented by x. Does 1.23(261.50)=321.7? Yes or no
Yes, i see it now. thanks you
Good. The 1990 population was x= 261.50. You asked what the increase in population would be. How would you find it, starting with x = 261.50? Show your work.
