The US helped South VietNam negotiate a peace that would leave them secure. The US would withdraw troops but still sell them parts and replacements for the weapons they were using.
The North Vietnam would cease hostilities and allow SVN to exist peacefully. That's how we won in Vietnam.

It was lost 2 years later when Congress refused to honor the treaty buy not sending any more parts etc. The South's Army could not continue to defend itself. The North invaded again.
