Part A: Find a rational number that is between 5.2 and 5.5. Explain why it is rational. (2 points) Part B: Find an irrational number that is between 5.2 and 5.5. Explain why it is irrational. Include the decimal approximation of the irrational number to the nearest hundredth. (3 points)

OpenStudy (nduong21):

1) is pretty open-ended. Any solution that fits the criteria will work. For the rational number, it's easy, just pick a number between the two given numbers: 5.4 For the irrational number, it will be a little trickier. I'll start with √2 and see what I need to multiply it by to get in the ballpark: √2 ≈ 1.414 Multiplying it by 4.5 we get: 4.5√2 ≈ 6.3640 (too high), let's try 4.0 4√2 ≈ 5.6569 (still too high, let's try 3.8 3.8√2 ≈ 5.3740 That is an irrational value in the range that you want.
