Ok, so let's factor by grouping, because I find it easier. Have you learned that yet?

If you haven't I'll just show you. x^2 - 7x + 10 So in your equation above, you wrote ax^2 +- bx +- c, so when you factor by grouping, you multiply a * c, and find factors of that which when added equal b. So in this equation, a = 1 and c = 10, so you have to try to find factors of 10 that add up to -7. Any ideas of the two numbers?

To make this easier, I will list factors of 10. 1 * 10 -1 * -10 2 * 5 -2 * -5 Any of these add up to -7?

Since it is pretty obvious, I will continue. -2 and -5 multiplied is 10, and added is -7. So let's group. x^2 - 7x + 10 x^2 - 2x - 5x +10 I just used the two factors we found. Notice these equations are equivalent. Now group. (x^2 - 2x) + (- 5x +10) ***** DO NOT FORGET TO ADD A PLUS SIGN IN THE MIDDLE Take out common factors (x)(x - 2) + (-5)(x -2) Now, the last two terms of each thing must be the same in order to do this. (x -5)(x - 2). Hope this helped!!!
