They give you information for two different equations, one for money and one for number of laps

$257.00 = (20 + 0.80*y) + (15 + 0.85*x)
and
y = 5/4 * x

if you put in y from the second to the first you have..

257 = 20 + 0.8*1.25*x + 15 + 0.85x

257 = 20 + x + 15 + 0.85x

257 = 35 + 1.85x
