how would an environmentalist react to an oil spill and what action would they take?

Think of the BP oil spill. When it happened there was a near-consensus on how environmentalists reacted. Whereas before not many cared about deep-water drilling because of the lack of major incident with them, the spill at the BP rig caused outrage over how little was done to prevent it and over the horrible environmental effects. The action the could take would range from vocal outrage (on the news, journals, ect) to protesting, to helping to pursue legal punishment for the company's negligence.
