I think the number one way would be to make yourself interesting. If your content is interesting, people will come to your website. Another way could be to make it easy for your users to share your content.

Also have social media pages for your site!
A YouTube account would also increase viewership a ton.

You might want to look into SEO (search engine optimization) tactics to make your website more visible in search engine results, as well. 

Marketing helps - advertisements would certainly net you more popularity - there are free sites you can list your website on etc, though conventional advertising e.g banner ads etc tend to cost a bit of money to place so probably only viable if you have a big budget. Having active social media definitely helps as free advertising as has been suggested. :) 

If you could get anybody - friends etc or people you pay to sponsor you to give your website a shout out if they have a big social media/YouTube following or website themselves it could definitely help.
