Imagine that the cylinder is a can, and that you remove both ends. Cut the resulting cylinder once, lengthwise. The result, when flattened out, is just a rectangle whose length is the circumference of the cylinder and whose width is the height of the cylinder. What is the shape of the top / bottom?

a cylinder is a prism with a circle as a base, 2 circle shaped sides and 1 rectangular side.
