It includes the takeoff and return of the Enola Gay, which dropped "Little Boy" on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. The footage also depicts the mushroom cloud above Nagasaki.

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

Little Boy and Fat Man are the names of the atomic bombs dropped on Japan. President Truman didn't know that we were developing the bomb until FDR died and he was sworn in. Ultimately, the decision to use them was his. President Truman decided to drop the bombs on Japan in order to end the war quickly and save American lives. The Japanese in the South Pacific were fierce fighters. The US had an island hopping campaign with the goal of eventually invading Japan. You may know about the heroic efforts of the allies at Normandy that was the prelude to victory in Europe. The island hopping campaign was like having a D-Day invasion on each island. And we didn't have the Brits and some other allies to help. The campaign in the Pacific was close to invading Japan. Truman becomes aware of a way to not sacrifice even more American (and Australian) lives. He warns Japan. They don't believe him. We drop the first bomb on Hiroshima and utterly destroy that city. No response from Japan. So in a couple days we drop another on Nagasaki. Some people now say it was a terrible thing that we did. It was. But in war, you destroy the enemy and preserve your own people as best you can. So that's why Little Boy and Fat Man were dropped on Japan.

OpenStudy (sapphiremoon):

I think she's asking why wasn't it the reverse, the Fat Man on Hiroshima and Little Boy on Nagasaki. I have no clue, history isn't my strong suit, but I try to help when I can.

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

@SapphireMoon Little Boy was the less powerful of the two. It had not been previously tested. These are two possible reasons for using it first. If one bomb had been enough, it makes sense to use the least powerful one. And if it did not work correctly, they had a Fat Man as the back up. A Fat Man bomb was tested at the Trinity site in New Mexico before the two bombs were sent to Japan. Ironically, Little Boy actually did more damage because of geography. Hiroshima was on a flat plane. Nagasaki is in a small valley which contained the blast better.
