Provide a proper parenthetical citation for this quotation: President Barack Obama is making history during his four-day trip to Africa. He is now the first sitting U.S. president to visit Kenya and Ethiopia. On Tuesday, he will become the first American president to address the African Union. Author Allie Mann source Time for Kids page not applicable

OpenStudy (sam141101):

sorry i suck at quotations I'm on this subject at school right now to I'm sorry hope you get some help :)

OpenStudy (ilovebmth1234):

thank you its alright

OpenStudy (sapphiremoon):

(Mann) is probably the way it's done. Never done a parenthetical without a page number, but with the page number it would be something like (Mann, p. 14) so...

OpenStudy (ilovebmth1234):

i dont get it

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Parenthetical citations are used in writing so that the reader can read the quote, then see the parenthetic citation, then refer to the bibliography and know what source the quote was found in.

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

@ilovebmth1234 Do you know if it is supposed to be in MLA or APA format?

OpenStudy (ilovebmth1234):

MLA

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

"President Barack Obama is making history during his four-day trip to Africa. He is now the first sitting U.S. president to visit Kenya and Ethiopia. On Tuesday, he will become the first American president to address the African Union" (Mann, Allie).

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Actually, you just need the last name. Only use first names in the format (A, Mann) if there are two authors with the same name. So go with (Mann).

OpenStudy (ilovebmth1234):

thanks :D

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

(A. Mann) period not a comma, mb.

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

No problem

OpenStudy (ilovebmth1234):

true or false

OpenStudy (ilovebmth1234):

You only need to provide a parenthetical citation for direct quotations.

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

You need parenthetical citations for indirect quotations, because whilst you are not using the authors work, word-for-word, you are using their thoughts and ideas to generate your own(words).

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Just think, if you wrote an entire essay on a subject and someone retrieved information from your essay...even if they didn't use it word-for-word, wouldn't you want credit since they used your thoughts and ideas to complete their own work?

OpenStudy (ilovebmth1234):

i guess just depends on how important the essay was lol sorry i understand what your saying i do

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Yeah :)

OpenStudy (sapphiremoon):

As long as everything's resolved, lol. So I was right, I guess?

OpenStudy (ilovebmth1234):

yeah thank you

OpenStudy (shadowlegendx):

Do you have any other questions?

OpenStudy (ilovebmth1234):

no i dont thank you
