You don't "lose wages." Rather, certain amounts of money are deducted from your paycheck, some at your request, some mandated by law. Suppose you wished to contribute to your own retirement savings yourself; that'd be a voluntary deduction. On the other hand, your employer MUST deduct federal and sometimes state income taxes from your pay...I'd call that involuntary deductions.
Yes, there are some which are voluntary and involuntary. Still, it can be seen to an employee as truly as a loss.
