decide which number is the larger and which is the smaller. Be careful here. Subtract the smaller number from the larger. Show your work. If done correctly, your answer will be the distance between the 2 numbers / points on the number line.

OpenStudy (mhchen):

The distance between 2 points is the first term, subtracting the 2nd term. Which phrase does it?

OpenStudy (shaima):

i dont Understand .-.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

What don't you understand? Ask some questions, please.

OpenStudy (shaima):

i dont understand what to do am i pose to find the answer and find the same answer but in a diff way?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Let's look at a number line. draw a horizontal line. Mark the origin with '0.' Mark the point where x=4.7 (that will be to the right of the origin). Mark the point where x=-11.2. What is the positive distance from the point -11.2 to the origin? What is the positive distance from the origin to the point marked 4.7? What is the positive distance from -11.2 to +4.7?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Let your graph help you answer this question.

OpenStudy (shaima):

thats what i dont understand

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Have you drawn the graph as I asked you to do?

OpenStudy (shaima):

._. what am i pose to do after that?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Have you drawn the graph yet?

OpenStudy (shaima):

yea on my paper?

OpenStudy (shaima):

i dont did it

OpenStudy (shaima):

what am i pose to do with the number line?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Do it, please. I'm glad to help you, but I expect you to follow my directions. I have already explained precisely what I want you to do with that number line. If you don't understand something, it is up to you to ask clarifying questions.

OpenStudy (shaima):

can u help me draw the number line?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

I have already drawn a line for you. I want you to mark the origin, the point x=-11.2, and the point 4.7 on it. Doesn't have to be a perfect drawing.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

|dw:1475891799709:dw|

OpenStudy (mathmale):

click on the pencil icon. This will open my drawing in a new frame. You can edit the copy. Mark x=-11.2, x=0 and x=4.7 on that line. Then click on Post.

OpenStudy (shaima):

|dw:1475891870482:dw| i think it goes there i dont know..

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Label each of the 3 points: x=-11.2, x=0, x=4.7. Don't be afraid to make a mistake. Just do the work.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

x=0 is called the "origin." x=-11.2 is to the left of the origin. x=4.7 is to the right of the origin.

OpenStudy (shaima):

|dw:1475892004558:dw| i think..
