I hope this helps: http://old.iupac.org/goldbook/ET07034.pdf

This is my GUESS. This SOUNDS as though it comes from QUANTUM MECHANICS. It seems that forces can arise between particles if they SWAP or EXCHANGE places, and that there's an EXCHANGE ENERGY involved. It seems that it's NOT ELECTROSTATIC, nor is it MAGNETIC, nor is it GRAVITATIONAL, so it's EXCHANGE. I tripped over it when looking at solid state magnetism, as one of the forces messing around in certain materials to produce the various weird and wonderful magnetic effects such as dia, para, ferro, anti ferro, ferri magnetism, possibly superconducting magnetism as well (if such a thing exists) etc etc etc. bon chance, et bon voyage et bon appetit http://perendis.webs.com
