my answer:
1/2x - 8 = -3/2x + 2

1/2x - 8 - 1/2x = -3/2x + 2 - 1/2x

-8 = -2x + 2

-8 - 2 = -2x + 2 - 2

-10 = -2x

-10/-2 = -2x/-2

5 = x

x = 5
