I have heard many people referring to OS as "dead". Is this because of it being bought by brainly?

That's just an assumption, but it's mainly because the user base has decreased and the site is literally dead. The chats and questions section is not as active as it once used to be.

It's not exactly an assumption.  There is some truth to it. Some people I know left OS because of the buyout, then the google search thing they pulled. That's not helping either.
It may not be dead because of them, but it contributed to it, that's for sure.
