In october, for the southern hemisphere, I thought that the Earth was tilted slightly toward the sun, so that it received more direct sunlight for a longer period of time.

It seems maybe you have not learned so much:

The southern hemisphere is moving towards its summer months in October. In summer the hemisphere is tilted TOWARDS the sun.
