OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

Zheng He lead 7 voyages during the Ming reign. He sailed along the Chinese coast south into Indonesia, around VietNam, and into the Indian Ocean. He is said to have reached the Arabian peninsula and east African coast. He had very large ships. The largest ships we know of were probably not used on the ocean, but still he used large and impressive ships full of doctors, scholars, diplomats and soldiers. The idea here is not trade or exploration. Rather, the idea was to impress other nations with the power of China. So anything he brought back would have been interesting novelties or items seen as gifts to the Emperor.
