In mathematics, an extraneous solution (or spurious solution) is a solution, such as that to an equation, that emerges from the process of solving the problem but is not a valid solution to the original problem.

A solution to an exponential equation that isn't real. Sometimes square-rooting both sides of an equation will give you two values of x but one, when put back into the original equation, doesn't produce a true statement.
