I have been told the journey from middle school to high school have been an essential moment in their lives. While some believe that high school will entail some of the toughest years of their life, I can assure you that this is not the case. With the right attitude coming in, the image of a life full of stress and workloads that cannot be fulfilled is far from the reality of the high school experience. For most, these years turn out to be the greatest years of their lives. However, I will say that great consideration should be taken about how you conduct yourself during freshman year. Bad studying habits and poor school performance during freshman year can easily destroy your high school experience. Navigating extracurricular activities, exploring what different colleges have to offer, and going out on prom night are all part of what makes high school a truly unforgettable experience worth protecting from easily avoidable mistakes. Nevertheless, with the right advice, these mistakes can simply be avoided.

It is important for you incoming freshmans to keep in mind that high school calls for more responsibility than what was required in your lower grades. Choosing what interests you and hobbies that captivate you is more essential that it was before. Remember to do what you love. Education, at this stage, offers you an opportunity to discover yourself. This is the time in your life to build on your strengths, while you work hard on diminishing your weaknesses. At the same time, deciding upon whether or not you want to go to college is also crucial. As someone who has experienced college election first hand, I suggest that freshman start planning now. I strongly recommend to choose more than two colleges by looking at the requirements and start working on them before it becomes too late. In my case, I waited to think about college until my senior year. This drowned me in stress until I finally decided to ask for help from a counselor. Luckily, I had someone there to advise me in the college application process before it was too late. From this experience, I can tell you that early college planning is the key to success.

In addition to early college planning, studying and doing your homework on a daily basis is another piece of essential advice. During high school, teachers tend to give more homework and quizzes in order to evaluate students’ knowledge on specific topics. In my earlier years of high school, I struggled a lot in managing my time wisely. I used to wait to do my homework and study for my exams until the last minute, which led to the development of nightmarish dreams about being unable to finish my homework or pass my tests. The mismanagement of my time lead me to feel hopeless and anxious. This is why time management skills, such as personal schedule creating and writing out your upcoming assignments in ad agenda, are important to develop before you make the jump from middle school to high school. Don’t wait until the last minute to study or complete assignments because you will regret it.

Arguably the most important piece of advice I can offer is to participate in enjoyable extracurricular activities. The human body is a machine that needs to be refueled with pleasurable activities every once in a while. High school can become a miserable experience if all you do is work and study. By participating in school activities, such as sports and clubs, you are providing yourself a chance to explore your passions and interests. During my junior year, I received a certificate for my participation in creating a photo book against bullying for my school. I also joined the basketball team, which allowed me to compete against other schools. I would not change these experiences for the world. Even better, since colleges prefer students with extracurricular activities, you would be increasing your chance of getting into the college of your dreams.
